Young professionals may be burned out but they are anything but complacent when it comes to bettering their mental health.
The Burnout Generation
Burnout is a growing mental health problem in America. On May 25, 2019, it was officially classified as a medical condition by the World Health Organization. It refers to emotional, physical, and mental exhaustion caused by excessive and prolonged stress. According to a recent study, 44% of people reported feeling moderately burned out at work, while an additional 23% reported feeling extremely burned out.
Although burnout is a mental health issue across all ages and industries, young professionals are especially affected. Perhaps this stress stems from financial insecurity and student debt. Maybe it’s the constant competition and comparison from social media, or the nerve-wracking need to be connected and available 24/7. There’s certainly no shortage of reasons why the 77 million people in this group were recently nicknamed the “burnout generation” in a viral Buzzfeed article.
“Young professionals may be burned out but they are anything but complacent when it comes to bettering their mental health,” says Jennifer Marcenelle who has dedicated her career to combating the burnout epidemic.
Ever interested in self-care and holistic wellness, many young professionals are gravitating toward alternative and all-natural solutions to combat burnout. One new approach that is fast gaining popularity is “Gemstone Therapy.” If you haven’t encountered this holistic trend yet, you will soon. It’s the ancient practice of using crystals to improve health and mental wellness.
As a Board-Certified, Holistic, Registered Nurse with over 30 years of experience in the medical field, Marcenelle has seen a rapid rise in interest for this alternative treatment. A growing number of young people are turning to it as an all-natural solution for help with burnout, anxiety, and depression. Young professionals from LA to Miami pay top dollar for sessions with gemstone therapists as this treatment has been found to energize the body and mind and minimize stress.
Why the sudden rise in popularity? Well, thanks to celebs like Adele, Victoria Beckham, and Princess Kate, crystal healing went from a new-age curiosity to a mainstream sensation almost overnight. Walk down the streets of NYC today and you will be bombarded with ads for gemstone beauty treatments. And it’s not just a trend for yuppie urbanites with extra cash. Etsy has nearly 350,000 items marked “healing crystals” and even Walmart now sells $11 Chakra sets.
But will this new trend actually do anything to reduce burnout? As with all alternative health treatments, there is skepticism and debate. Regardless of why or how it works, and whether you believe in it or not, crystal healing has undoubtedly helped people improve their mental health and reduce burnout, which is the ultimate goal.
“Burnout is a huge mental health problem in the workplace today and it needs to be taken seriously. Not only is it bad on a personal health level, it’s bad on a business level as burned out employees cannot work as effectively…”
…says Marcenelle whose firsthand exposure to the day-to-day stresses of critical care nursing opened her eyes to the burnout epidemic that ravages Americans. As a result, she experienced personal, professional and spiritual burnout, and after a near-suicide, she became her own critical care patient. Now she is on a mission to help others take their life back from burnout.
