The Importance of Sleep During Times of High Stress.

It’s difficult to sleep when there is so much turbulence going on: from racial injustices and police brutality to COVID-19 and let’s not forget “return anxiety” and adjusting back to 9-5 work schedules after being at home. For several months, more than half of employed Americans were free from the daily grind of commuting and sitting in a cubicle for eight hours a day. Working from home, they were finally able to nourish their bodies in one of the healthiest ways possible: sleep. Now, as America returns to normalcy and businesses begin to reopen, we must adjust back to the old 9-5 routine.

But how can you sleep when there is so much to be anxious about in the world?

According to Neuroscience expert Dr. Patrick Porter, a good night’s sleep is even more important during times of high stress and anxiety. A return to workplace normalcy does not have to mean a return to sleep deprivation.

“Insufficient sleep can increase stress levels. Sleep plays a major role in mental health. Before the pandemic consumed our lives, sleep deprivation was a growing health problem in America with serious complications…”

…says Dr. Porter, who has devoted his career to researching the brain and mental wellness. Lack of sleep poses a myriad of health issues including depression, ADHD, obesity, Type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, cancer, and Alzheimer’s. It’s no wonder why the CDC labeled sleep deprivation a public health epidemic in 2014.

“When it comes to sleep, quality is more important than quantity. Luckily, there are many things you can do to improve sleep hygiene and get back on track…”

…says Dr. Porter. According to Dr. Porter, a few brief tips for better sleep include limiting screen time before bed, avoiding naps or drinking caffeine in the afternoon, and reserving the bedroom for sleep only.
