According to holistic health expert Jennifer Marcenelle, healing from intense emotional injury is crucial for long-term physical health.
A Broken Heart
Heartache is the worst and it may be more damaging than we even thought. Whether you’re going through a breakup, a divorce, or suffering after the loss of a loved one, recovering from heartache is hard work. And it’s not just in your head —it takes a physical toll on your body. Research shows heartache can cause immediate physical responses like insomnia, digestive problems, headaches, and chest pain. New insights show heartache not only affects your body in the short run, but it also has a significant impact on long term physical health. While the condition itself isn’t new, our understanding of it is.
According to holistic health expert Jennifer Marcenelle, healing from intense emotional injury is crucial for long-term physical health.
“Emotional health and physical health are closely related. While it’s easy to stuff those emotions down and move on, ignoring it can cause insidious physical illness..”
…says Jennifer Marcenelle. As a board-certified, holistic, registered nurse with over 30 years of experience in the medical field, Marcenelle has seen the damaging and lasting effects of ignored emotional injury. Intense emotional stress can have a significant impact on long term physical health. It can affect your muscular-skeletal system by triggering headaches (both migraine and tension), and it has also been linked to neck, shoulder, and back pain. It can affect respiratory health by exacerbating breathing problems for people with pre-existing respiratory diseases. It can affect gut health and may trigger pain, bloating and other discomforts. New research even shows heartbreak can physically change the shape of your heart and cause lasting damage that can increase the risk of developing other heart-related conditions in the future!
Marcenelle actually witnessed a patient die of a broken heart while working as an ER and cardiovascular critical care nurse. A 25-year-old male died in her trauma room as a result of injuries sustained from a motor vehicle accident. Moments later, the patient’s mother grabbed her chest, collapsed on the floor and died instantly of a massive heart attack. Though this example is obviously of the acute physical impact of emotional injury, it shows just how serious and real it is.
It’s easy to numb the pain of a broken heart with momentary distractions like food and alcohol. Diving into a pint of Ben and Jerry’s or going to the bar with your friends is understandable and even expected. Like all things in life, moderation is key. Often, people rely too heavily on these unhealthy coping techniques which can (ironically) put your heart at even more risk.
“In order to prevent future physical illness, it’s important to confront your feelings, not just numb them…”
…says Marcenelle who learned this first-hand healing from her own divorce. She is an advocate of positive and holistic healing techniques like meditation, deep breathing, yoga, and Gemstone and Diamond therapy.
