Fighting Alzheimer’s & Memory Loss: A Unique Challenge In The COVID Era

Neuroscience Expert Shares Brain-Boosting Tips for Seniors to Improve Mental Clarity & Ward off Alzheimer's.

Memory loss is often a normal part of the aging process. Although it doesn’t always indicate a serious condition like Alzheimer’s disease, any type of cognitive decline is scary. The idea of seeing a loved one lose their ability to recall treasured memories is devastating. Currently, 5.6 million Americans 65 and older are living with Alzheimer’s. Sadly this number is expected to triple by 2050.

Fighting Memory Loss During COVID.

According to Neuroscience Expert Dr. Patrick Porter, fighting Alzheimer’s and memory loss is even more challenging in the COVID era.

“We have just experienced a year filled with trauma. Heightened feelings of stress, fear, grief, anxiety, and loneliness are all factors that impact brain-health and increase the risk of memory loss, especially among older people…”

…says Dr. Porter, who has devoted his career to researching the brain, mental wellness, and cognitive functioning. In addition to these psychological stressors that contribute to memory loss, the Coronavirus itself affects the brain. Though much research still needs to be done regarding the long-term effects of COVID-19, there is increasing evidence that shows there may be mild, yet very real, the brain damage that occurs in many survivors, causing pervasive yet subtle cognitive, behavioral, and psychological problems.

“Although there is no cure for Alzheimer’s, you can slow its progression and you can reduce your risk. Whether you’re fighting dementia, warding off age-related memory loss, or just looking to sharpen your mind, there are many things you can do to enhance your brain health.”

…says Dr. Porter. One brain-boosting strategy he recommends is to stay active and get your body moving. Regular aerobic activity boosts blood flow to your brain and helps maintain the size of the brain’s hippocampus, which is involved in memory and learning. According to Dr. Porter, what you eat is also important. Leafy green vegetables like kale, collard greens, and spinach are great brain-foods. They’re rich sources of nutrients (like folate, vitamin E, carotenoids, and flavonoids) that have been linked to lowering the risk of dementia and cognitive decline. Dr. Porter is also an advocate of restorative activities like meditating, braintapping, reading, and listening to music.
