America’s Sleep Deficit.
The COVID-19 quarantine has changed many aspects of our lives – including the way we sleep. Right now, millions of people across the US are quarantined at home, spending more time in bed and logging more sleep hours. But with emotions ranging from stress and anxiety to boredom and frustration, they are not necessarily sleeping better.
Although many states are sheltering-in-place for at least another month, the end of quarantine may be in sight for others and once normalcy resumes, it will be a rude awakening to our sleep.
According to Neuroscience expert Dr. Patrick Porter, COVID-19 has unexpectedly shined a much-needed spotlight on America’s sleep deficit.
“Sleep plays a major role in physical and mental health. Before the pandemic consumed our lives, sleep deprivation was a growing health problem in America with serious complications…”
…says Dr. Porter, who has devoted his career to researching the brain and mental wellness. Lack of sleep poses a myriad of health issues including depression, ADHD, obesity, Type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, cancer, and Alzheimer’s. It’s no wonder why the CDC labeled sleep deprivation a public health epidemic in 2014.
“Structures in the brain help determine when you fall asleep and wake up. Now that people are working from home, they can finally allow their bodies to fall into a more natural sleep rhythm,” says Dr. Porter. Although people may be logging more sleep hours and spending more time in bed, they are not necessarily sleeping better. Spending more time in bed may actually be hurting your health, not helping it.
“Too much sleep can be just as damaging as too little. Balance is key and quality is more important than quantity. Luckily, there are many things you can do to improve sleep hygiene…”
…says Dr. Porter. While it’s tempting to sleep whenever you want, keeping a regular sleep cycle is important. Dr. Porter encourages people to limit screen time before bed, avoid taking naps or drinking caffeine in the afternoon, and reserve the bedroom for sleep only.
