COVID-19: An Unlikely Catalyst For Arts & Entrepreneurship

Expert Business Advice for Aspiring Entrepreneurs Pursuing Creative Careers in the Post-COVID Era.

Although a return to normalcy is in sight for some American businesses, the pandemic has created enduring changes to the way we live and work. In the past few months, more than half of employed Americans transitioned to working from home. Untethered from the daily grind of commuting and sitting in a cubicle for eight hours a day, people are now thinking more about the role work plays in their lives and questioning their 9-5 career choice.

Post COVID-19 Entrepreneurship.

COVID-19 has become an unlikely catalyst for creative entrepreneurship as many people are using this time to work on hobbies and artistic side hustles that can support them financially.

According to business and career expert Ardre Orie, encouragement, inspiration, and a motivational mindset is crucial right now for these budding entrepreneurs.

“Whether it’s launching a freelance career, writing a book, or dabbling in the gig economy, the time for entrepreneurship is now…”

…says Orie, who understands the perils of career shifting first hand. As a new mom, Orie walked away from her traditional job as an elementary school principal to build her career as a writer focusing on stories of triumph. Her goal was to change the way women and girls see themselves and the world through business and to create platforms and media that allowed their marginalized voices to be heard. She began 13th & Joan Publishing House as a vehicle for aspiring authors, playwrights, and film directors to tell their stories and distribute them on a large scale. Today, it is an international, multimedia publishing agency and Orie has helped thousands of aspiring entrepreneurs and young creatives succeed in business.

Now more than ever, people want to feel like they are accomplishing something for themselves…but where does one start?

According to Orie, pursuing a career of passion begins with small, manageable steps, and time commitment. Whether you are an aspiring writer, artist, musician, or selling goods on Etsy, you should set aside at least 30 minutes a day to work on your idea or perfect your craft. Whatever industry you want to go into, connect, and network with others in the field. It’s imperative to align with professionals to make the process easy. If you don’t have the capital to hire professional consultants (and let’s face it…many do not) Orie suggests immersing yourself in a community of people that are doing what you want to do. According to Orie, the number one mistake young entrepreneurs make is trying to go it alone.

Entrepreneurship is hard work in any environment, let alone a post-COVID recession. It may seem crazy to start a new career or launch a business now but many successful and well-known businesses started during times of economic turbulence.

“It’s through this disruptive change that innovation emerges and new companies are born. These budding entrepreneurs may be the ones to lead the economy out the COVID-19 created recession,” says Orie.

Whether it’s launching a freelance career, writing a book, or dabbling in the gig economy, the time for entrepreneurship is now.
