A New Era of Political PTSD.

No matter which side of the political spectrum you fall on, there is one thing on which we can all agree: amid this election and the ongoing pandemic, stress and anxiety levels are at an all-time high.

According to a recent survey, more than 2/3 of U.S. adults said the presidential contest on Nov. 3 is causing major stress in their lives.

According to Neuroscience Expert, Dr. Patrick Porter, managing this stress is imperative, especially in the age of COVID-19.

“Your emotional wellbeing plays a major role in your ability to maintain good physical health. Stress takes a toll on your mind as well as your body…”

…says Dr. Porter who has devoted his career to researching the brain, mental wellness, and cognitive functioning. According to Dr. Porter, emotional stress can trigger a host of health problems. The physical response involves your immune system, your heart and blood vessels, and how certain glands in your body secrete hormones.

“The past nine months have been an emotional rollercoaster. We are all grappling with uncertainty and change and people desperately need positive strategies to cope. Fortunately, there are many things you can do to deactivate the body’s stress response…”

But how can you relax when there is so much uncertainty? According to Dr. Porter, it is important to focus your energy on what you can control. Eat well, stay active, and get the right amount of sleep. (When the quality or quantity of our sleep is poor, we are less focused, less resilient, and we have fewer internal resources for managing stress and anxiety.) Dr. Porter also recommends carving out time for self-care. He is an advocate of restorative activities like meditating, braintapping, reading, and listening to music. A little mindfulness can go a long way and managing mental health will help us all get through this challenging moment in history.

The past nine months have been an emotional rollercoaster. We are all grappling with uncertainty and change and people desperately need positive strategies to cope. Fortunately, there are many things you can do to deactivate the body’s stress response.
