Can Emotional Literacy Predict & Prevent School Shootings?

Medical Expert Shares Strategies for Future Safety.

Mass shootings are becoming a disturbing epidemic in the US, especially at schools. Just seven weeks into 2018, there had already been eight shootings at US schools. These recent cases have everyone looking to prevent the next tragedy. While much of this conversation surrounds gun laws, another important issue needs to be addressed: These shootings reveal a serious gap in our mental health system.

“Young people are losing their ability to read emotions and this is a very serious psychological and emotional impairment.”

– Dr. Rich Castellano

According to Dr. Richard Castellano, the solution lies in emotional literacy education.

One common theme that connects these recent tragedies is that the shooters lacked empathy and the ability to relate to others (hallmark traits of serious personality disorders like Antisocial Personality Disorder and Schizophrenia.) But the gunman in these cases did not have schizophrenia…they suffered from the severe pain of profound emotional illiteracy.

“Young people are losing their ability to read emotions and this is a very serious psychological and emotional impairment,” says Castellano, a facial plastic surgeon who devoted his practice to researching the impact of facial expressions and body language on human behavior.

Emotional literacy includes an understanding of human interactions, communication, and nonverbal cues – social skills that many in the digital generation lack. According to a recent article in Psychology Today, the rise of technology has led to a fall in emotional intelligence. The more time kids spend online, the less time they have with their own thoughts and feelings. This may not seem like a big problem but it can lead to serious social-emotional issues…as we can see with the many recent cases of violence.

“School shootings are never a surprise because at risk kids leave plenty of warning signs. Now we can measure and stratify who are more credible risks.”

Castellano is on a crusade to prevent tragedy by teaching people about nonverbal communication and emotional literacy. He has advice for students and teachers on what to look for and how to help a student in need before tragedy strikes.
